Why Isn't My Page Showing Up on Google?
A quick troubleshooting checklist for pages that won't index — and what to do about each cause.
Your page is live, but a site: search on Google comes up empty. Before you panic, run through this checklist — the cause is almost always one of these.
1. It's blocked from indexing
Check the page's HTML for a <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag, and check your robots.txt for a Disallow rule. These are the most common — and most overlooked — reasons a page never shows up.
2. Google hasn't found it yet
If the page isn't in your sitemap and nothing links to it, Google may simply not know it exists. Add it to your sitemap and link to it from a page that already gets crawled.
3. It's too new
New domains and new pages can take days or weeks to be crawled on their own. This is normal — and it's the easiest one to fix: submit the URL directly instead of waiting.
4. The content is thin or duplicated
Google may crawl a page and choose not to index it if it's near-empty or a duplicate of another URL. Make sure the page has unique, substantive content and a canonical tag pointing to itself.
The fast fix
Once you've ruled out blocks and thin content, the remaining problem is usually just time. Drop the URL into Cheetah Indexer to push it into Google's indexing pipeline, then check back in a day or two with a site: search. If it's indexable, this is the quickest way to get it seen.
